During the application process, our teams will match you to a course depending on your goals and current abilities. Whether you’re looking to earn a GCSE qualification to support your career or you’re an adult looking to brush up on these core skills, North Hertfordshire College is here to support you on your journey.

Where will your own studies take you?
These courses are more academic than Functional Skills. By studying for your GCSEs as an adult learner, you’ll develop a strong theoretical knowledge on a variety of topics and the skills to back it up. The strong foundation you’ll develop through your GCSE will help you if you want to study this topic further.
For example, an English Language GCSE focuses on reading and writing abilities, as well as the concepts behind sentence structure and the English language.
These courses are more skills-based than GCSEs. A Functional Skills course will help you learn how to use English and Maths in everyday situations, improving the way you work and also having a positive impact on your personal life. At it’s core, a Functional Skills programme will give you the life skills you need to achieve.
For example, an English Functional Skills programme focuses on reading, writing, and communication and how these can be applied to everyday life.
