If you need to refresh or upgrade your English skills and would also like to gain a nationally recognised Functional Skills qualification in English then this is the course for you.
HOW AND WHAT WILL I LEARN?
There are five levels of qualifications within the Functional English Curriculum:
Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3
Level 1, which is the equivalent of a GCSE grade D to G
Level 2, which is the equivalent of a GCSE grade A to C
Applicants will have a confidential interview with a member of the Skills for Life team to assess their current English level and agree on a suitable level of course to study.
Following their interview learners will begin their course attending a 3 hour session once a week.
Entry 1/2/3 Course Outline
Speak to communicate, engage in discussions and listen for and identify information
Read and understand texts, find relevant information, read familiar topics in newspapers and understand everyday signs and symbols
Improve letter writing and spelling, improve sentences using punctuation correctly and be able to proofread your work
Level 1/2 Course Outline
Listen for instructions, engage in discussions using facts and opinions and make relevant contributions
Identify different types of text using different reading strategies to locate information and analyse text to evaluate effectiveness
Write for different purposes and audience using appropriate language, improve spelling by using a variety of strategies and improve proofreading skills in order to produce accurate pieces of writing
START DATE AND RUNNING TIMES
Students can enrol throughout the year, each student will have an informal assessment which will determine their course start date and class timings.

Having successfully completed the course learners can progress onto:
GCSE English course (if Level 2 is reached),
