NHC works with schools across North Hertfordshire to raise awareness of our exciting and diverse options for young people
We regularly collaborate with local schools on a variety of events throughout the academic year, sharing details about our vocational courses, apprenticeships, and higher education opportunities and giving local students the chance to experience college life.
Most of our activity is focused on years 9, 10, and 11, but we also work with local primary schools to provide young children with exciting and memorable learning activities as well as help our students gain valuable experience of working with young children.
We offer a range of activities across our campuses in Stevenage and Hitchin and often join local schools for their own events so that students can learn more about their post-16 options and familiarise themselves with our campuses. These workshops and activities also support the KS3 and KS4 curriculums, too.

On-Campus Activities
Give your students the full North Hertfordshire College experience by joining us on-campus! Not only will your students get to enjoy an amazing day out, but they’ll also have first-hand experiences of our industry-standard facilities and classrooms, helping them make confident choices when it comes to their post-16 options.

Your visit will include a tour of our site to include our Motor Vehicle Workshops and ElectrAssure Training Academy, where you will meet one of our experienced Motor Vehicle tutors. During your visit, you and your students will receive an overview of available courses, progression opportunities, and career routes before taking part in a brief activity taster session.

Explore our campuses and check out our industry-standard classrooms for yourself through a campus tour, led by our amazing NHC team. This is a great way to help your students find out more about college and to familiarise themselves with our facilities ahead of their next step.

Calling all true crime fans and future forensic scientists – can you solve the mystery?
Students are invited to participate in our NHCSI : STEM to investigate their own crime scene using science, technology, and maths skills to decode, analyse and decipher the ‘perp’.
Students will use DNA testing of the scene and codebreaking technology to find evidence and participate in a real life escape room which will provide clues and evidence for them to identify the criminal!
Bespoke activities in your school or on-campus
These activities offer flexible delivery options, where either you and your students can join us at our campus or our team can come out to your school. Featuring engaging activities and helpful information, these workshops are a great way to help spark new ways of thinking in your pupils.

Presentation with information about how our apprenticeship offer works with Q & A. Students will take part in activities giving them an insight into skills required.

Skills developed: Creativity, artistic expression, understanding of the environment
Students will learn about biodiversity and what we can do in our every day lives to support it and protect our local environments.
They will then create individual paintings on canvases which can be taken home or combined to make a large piece of artwork to be displayed in your school.

Skills developed: Teamwork, communication, creative thinking, problem-solving
Enterprise skills are those that help an individual identify opportunities and use them to their advantage. Professionals use their enterprise skills to develop and implement business concepts, which can be especially helpful for employers seeking worthy applicants.
In teams, students will decide on a solution to the given scenario with input from NHC’s experts in marketing and design before presenting to a panel at the end of the session. Students will work towards developing their idea and working as a team throughout the session to ensure the final idea is clear, concise and has winning attributes.
Students will be tasked with creating a marketing campaign and logo for an app, product, or service that addresses one of the UN sustainable development goals.

Skills developed: Geography, creative thinking, maths, artistic expression
Students will learn about famous sculptures and art installations and where they are located in the British Isles. They will then have the chance to design their own sculpture ideas using art, geography and maths skills and share with the group.
They will have a chance to create miniature clay models of their proposed sculptures.

Did you know we also run the NHC Community Allotment project?
Designed to encourage local young people to engage with the environment, the NHC Community Allotment project provides our students with the tools they need to understand and advocate for healthy living. We train our students in gardening and allotment maintenance and offer support, advice, and collaboration opportunities for community groups.
Our students also volunteer during sessions for local organisations to help launch further allotment and healthy eating initiatives.
Previous work through the NHC Community Allotment includes working with the Roebuck Academy to help renovate their existing allotment and run practical sessions with the pupils. As well as providing Roebuck Academy’s pupils with the knowledge and space to care for their vegetable crops, NHC’s students also benefitted from hands-on practical experience of working with young children.
