Apprenticeships

Gain qualifications and earn while you learn

For many, apprenticeships are the perfect way to start their career. You’ll have a real job with a real salary while you learn key skills from experienced professionals both in the classroom and in a real workplace. After you’ve completed your apprenticeship programme, you’ll have a nationally recognised qualification as well as real-life industry experience.

How do I start an apprenticeship at NHC?

Once you’ve chosen which apprenticeship course you want to do, it’s time to start the application process!

Here’s Niall and Holly with all you need to know about starting an apprenticeship programme with North Hertfordshire College.

Best of luck with your application!

How does the application process work?

Step 1: Find an employer

Once you’ve identified the perfect apprenticeship programme for you, it’s time to start the application process by finding an employer.

This can be any relevant employer organisation who are happy to support you on your apprenticeship placement. We recommend looking at GOV.UK or GetMyFirstJob.co.uk. Some of our apprentices secure their employers through family friends or people they know, too.

Step 2: Make your CV shine

As with any job application process, it’s super important to have a strong CV to support you. This is your opportunity to shout about your achievements and skills, make sure to include as much as you can. From hobbies to volunteering experience, sell yourself!

It’s really important to explain your passion for your chosen industry both on your CV and during your interview.

Step 3: Earn while you learn

Once you’ve been offered the apprenticeship position, come and chat to the team. Get in touch with us at apprenticeships@nhc.ac.uk and let us know what apprenticeship programme you’ll be completing and with what employer.

Then, it’s time to get started on your programme!

Typically, apprentices will do four days per week working with their apprenticeship employer, and one day learning at college.

If you’re under 19, or in the first year of your course, you’ll earn £8 per hour. Depending on your age, you can earn up to £12.71, plus some employers pay even more!

The length of your entire apprenticeship programme can vary. Level two courses are normally one to two years, and level three can be anything between one and four years.
