Taught by our excellent team of tutors, like Linda Paterson, NHC’s higher education courses provide the opportunity for students to complete a degree on their doorstep or access higher education institutions around the country!
We spoke to Linda Paterson to find out more about what she does within our higher education department, and what led her to teaching at NHC in the first place. Find out more in her interview below:
What is your role here at the College?
“I’m a maths teacher and a programme manager for the Extended Degree in Science.”
What led you to your current role at North Hertfordshire College?
“I first started to be involved in the College as a volunteer in 1996 as I wanted to help young people develop their skills. I then moved on to teaching GCSE maths before moving into teaching Higher Education here at NHC.
“An extended degree is for people who may not have the grades or subjects required for direct entry to the first year of an undergraduate degree. Through the extended degree, these students will then have the opportunity to progress into higher education. This course is also perfect for anyone that wants to change their career, they’ll have the opportunity to do that after completing this course.”
What are some of your favourite parts of your job?
“I like getting to know the students. You meet them when they first start in September, and then you get to see them grow and develop throughout the year, before moving on to the first year of an undergraduate degree course to help them on their career path – it’s really satisfying to see.”
If you could speak to someone who is thinking about joining an Extended Degree course at NHC, what would you say to them?
“I’d tell them that this course is a great opportunity. You’ll get the support you need and the skills you need to progress onto a variety of courses at the University of Hertfordshire. For example, if a student wanted to go on to study pharmacy, then they’ll also learn the relevant chemistry during their time at NHC.”
“There are a variety of courses at the University of Hertfordshire you can progress onto from the Extended Degree Science. Some require you to pass an interview, and all require you to meet an academic tariff. “
