At North Hertfordshire College, we’re proud of every student who comes through our doors. Our students continue to impress us every year through their enthusiasm and the way they embrace the opportunities available to them, both inside and outside the classroom.
We’ve had so many successful students this year who are moving on to positive destinations now that they’ve finished their courses with us. We’ve pulled together some examples from NHC’s Class of 2022, not only to celebrate everything that they’ve achieved but to show you just how many different opportunities are open to you after you finish a course with NHC.
Where will your journey take you?
Millie first joined NHC on a Level 1 Child Development Studies course, a qualification she studied alongside her maths and English GCSEs. After finishing her Level 1 qualification, Millie decided to move into Health & Social Care, starting on a Level 1 qualification and working all the way up to her Level 3 diploma. Millie also took part in a placement with Trembaths as part of her Health & Social Care course – a placement that’s been so successful, Millie’s been offered a full-time carer role!
She told us: “If anyone is unsure about coming to college remember that, when I first came here, I was nowhere near what I’m like now. I was nervous and needed support, however as I have grown, I’ve been able to feel more confident and achieve my dream career. The biggest message I would give would be to never give up on what you want to achieve.”
Thanks to North Hertfordshire College’s Give A Future campaign, Isabelle was able to complete an internship with Re:View Creative alongside their graphic design course. During their placement, Isabelle said: “I feel very lucky to be given this opportunity and learn what it’s like in the workspace. I have worked on everything from leaflets and websites to vehicle graphics. I’m so grateful to have been able to do this at my age.”
Isabelle’s experience with Re:View doesn’t end here, though – the design studio has extended their offer to continue working with Isabelle alongside their studies at university!
Business was always Jake’s strongest subject at school and the only thing he was interested in studying. Rather than picking two more subjects to study alongside Business for A levels, Jake decided to focus on his favourite and apply for NHC’s Level 3 Business course. Now that he’s finished his course, Jake’s ready to take his next step towards his dream career by joining an apprenticeship with PWC – one of the Big 4 companies in the business sector!
He said: “I’m proud to have been offered this apprenticeship – they’re insanely competitive and difficult to get into!”
Ever since she was young, Emma knew that she wanted to be a beauty therapist. She took part in a placement with TLC as part of her studies with NHC and now, thanks to her amazing placement performance where she was rated as ‘exceeding expectations’, she’s been offered a job for the end of her course!
Thinking back on her experience with NHC, Emma said: “The College is very supportive and their connections are great. NHC has helped me work towards my dream job and, because of the support I got, I can say that I have now started my dream career.”
By studying NHC’s Access to Higher Education: Nursing & Midwifery course, Claire has achieved the qualifications she needs to move into degree-level study. She’ll be joining King’s College London in September for their Adult Nursing degree, which has just been announced as the second-best Adult Nursing qualification in the world!
Reflecting on her Access to HE experience, Claire said: “The Access course was challenging, but the structure helps to build resilience, time-management skills, teamwork, and communication skills. I had great teachers who made the course fun, and their support helped keep us on track. My classmates were also supportive and they’ve now become life-long friends.”
As well as gaining key industry knowledge during her Sports Coaching and Development course at NHC, Sophie also developed some important transferrable skills. Sophie interviewed for MBDA’s competitive degree apprenticeship programme, where she was shortlisted from a pool of 3,000 applicants… and successfully earned a place! Sophie will be joining the Sales and Business Development department as an apprentice this September, whilst also studying towards a Chartered Management degree at the University of Hertfordshire for one day a week.
Sophie told us: “The College has supported me through 1-to-1 sessions every half term, helping me set clear goals and targets to work towards. These sessions, as well as the support from my tutor, have helped me stay on track and take advantage of the opportunities given to me in regard to interview preparation and advice. I am very happy with my time at NHC, and the team have definitely helped guide me to this amazing destination!”
Kieran joined NHC’s Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in IT course to learn more about the industry and gain some practical experience. Now that he’s finished his course, he’s taking the next step towards his game development career goals by joining Sheffield Hallam University to study BA (Hons) Game Art Design!
He said of his NHC experience: “This course has helped me to reach my goals by giving me knowledge about future careers in the IT industry. This, along with the extra things the teachers taught us on the side about things that will be required of us in university or on an apprenticeship, has really helped me to understand my options and plan how to move forward in my career journey.”
