We spoke to Kieran Helyar, one of North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in IT students, about his experience of the College and his course and to find out more about his future plans. Find out more about where a course in computing could take you in his interview below!

What’s the most interesting part of your course?

“I think the most interesting part for me is when we get to do the practical lessons. I enjoy getting my hands on physical devices and taking them apart to learn how they work.”

What was the thing you found most surprising thing about studying at college?

“I would say the most surprising thing for me was how many days we were actually in the College. When you compare it to school, where you have to be in every day, I was expecting to have to be in the College for at least four out of five days each week… instead, we’re in for about 2 days a week and we then do some independent work outside of that.”

What are your next steps for after your course?

“After I finish my NHC course, I’m going to be studying Game Art Design at Sheffield Hallam University. This has always been something that I’ve wanted to do, and this course has given me the ability to study it full-time.

“This course has helped me to reach my goals by giving me the knowledge about future careers in the IT industry. This, along with the extra things the teachers taught us on the side about things that will be required of us in university or on an apprenticeship, has really helped me to understand my options and plan how to move forward in my career journey.”

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time?

“I hope to be working in game development, ideally for a big company. I want to be working somewhere that allows me to further develop my skills in the industry and progress further.”

If you could say anything to someone who’s thinking of coming to NHC, what would it be?

“I would tell them that they should definitely come to NHC because of the wide range of subjects available for them to learn. If you’re specifically interested in IT, the teachers are super helpful and always help students get the best grades they possibly can.”
