Since first starting her studies at North Hertfordshire College, Millie Godfrey has not only developed her knowledge of care practises, but she has also grown in confidence and has successfully completed a work placement – to the point where she’s secured a job for when she finishes her course!
Find out more about Millie’s NHC journey in her interview below:
Why did you choose to come to NHC?
“I came to one of the open evenings when I finished school. I’ve always been interested in childcare, and when I came to the open event and saw the College, it looked like a really fun and interesting course. I also met the tutor Karen, who was really lovely and made me see how interesting the course was going to be and that it would be something that I would enjoy.
“After completing my Level 1 qualification in Childcare, I moved into Health and Social Care and have now completed Level 1, 2 and nearly finished Level 3!”
What have been some of the highlights of your course so far?
“When I started my Health and Social care course, I began a placement at Trembaths. I was so nervous on my first day, but the staff were really supportive, and I have since worked there as a volunteer and have now become a carer. When I finish the course, I will work full time as a carer at Trembaths. So really, the placement was the start of my career.
“I love coming to college and being around my friends, my classmates are really supportive, and we all enjoy being around each other in the classroom, and outside of the classroom too! Not only that but, when we have assignments, we all work together and keep each other’s sprits up. 100%, these are going to be my lifelong friends.”
What are your greatest achievements on the course?
“Seeing my progress through the levels has given a me a real sense of achievement and shown me what I’m capable of. I’ve learnt things on the course that have allowed me to develop my skills in my work placement.
“The course supported me to also achieve my maths and English GCSE, which took time, but the teaching and support really helped. I was really determined to achieve this, and I kept working at it, so the day I passed was a real celebration. This has also allowed me to get the job at Trembaths.”
What has been the best bit of the course for you?
“Now that I have been at the college for a number of years, I’ve been able to take part in open events which allows me to talk to new students about the course and show them my successes and what they can achieve them too. Also, the tutors have been amazing, without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
What would you say to someone thinking about starting a course at NHC?
“If anyone is unsure about coming to college remember that, when I first came here, I was nowhere near what I’m like now. I was nervous and needed support, however as I have grown, I’ve been able to feel more confident and achieve my dream career. The biggest message I would give would be to never give up on what you want to achieve.”
