At North Hertfordshire College, our students are learning beyond the core curriculum. We’re proud to offer our students a range of extra-curricular activities and events, from employer networking sessions to stretch tasks that develop their skills even further.
Check out what’s been happening beyond the classroom over at our Engineering & Construction campus in our round-up:
Our Level 1 and 2 Carpentry students headed over to the ICON site, in Stevenage, for a tour and induction. During their visit, they had the opportunity to contribute to the final development by creating planters for the site. The students were given the designs and then sent off to construct a planter that met the design specifications. These finished planters will be used on-site in a permanent addition to this exciting new development.
These planters are another part of our students’ contributions to the ICON development site, as our brick students have also previously laid bricks at the site.
We’re delighted that our students have been able to contribute to this development!
Students on our Level 2 Motor Vehicle courses had the opportunity to apply for an assessment day with Halfords to help them prepare for their next steps after college. The day featured a presentation about the career journeys Halfords offers, as well as some practical assessments to determine the students’ skills.
Thanks to the positive engagement our students had with the session, and the good feedback they received, our students now have an exclusive opportunity to apply for apprenticeships with the organisation!
Students on our Level 1 Bricklaying course have been taking part in stretch tasks in our workshops. These extension activities see learners developing skills that are normally taught on courses that are higher level than the one they’re currently studying, helping prepare them for their next steps in September.
This year’s stretch task saw students learn to create decorative brickwork, a technique commonly used in the industry but which is normally taught on Level 2 and Level 3 courses. We’re proud to say that our students did a great job, creating beautiful (and stable) designs with their newfound skills.
We caught up with Level 1 student Angel to find out more about how it felt to complete the stretch task – check it out!
