Case Study: Angel Builds Bricklaying Skills in Stretch Tasks

Published on June 30, 2025

One of our core goals at North Hertfordshire College is to get our students to be where they want to be in the future. That’s why we’re always supporting our learners to develop the skills employers are looking for, and encouraging them to aim high and stretch themselves to go beyond the standard curriculum.

A great example is Angel Moon, one of NHC’s Level 1 Bricklaying students. As she came up to the end of her course and started to get ready for enrolling on her Level 2 course, Angel took part in some ‘stretch tasks’ to test her skills further. Stretch tasks allow students to learn a skill, technique, or behaviour that’s normally covered on the level above the one they’re currently studying – or, in Angel’s case, two levels higher!

She’s now learnt how to build decorative brickwork, a technique which is commonly used in the industry that’s normally taught on Level 2 and Level 3 courses. Thanks to Angel’s determination and skill with a brick trowel, she’s already got this skill under her belt ahead of her new course in September.

Reflecting on her NHC experience so far, Angel told us:

“I am thrilled to have completed my Level 1 Brickwork course, including the extension task! This journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. The hands-on experience and the skills I’ve gained have been invaluable.

“I am grateful for the support and guidance provided by my instructors, peers, and the ALS (Additional Learning Support) team. Their encouragement and expertise have been instrumental in my success. The ALS team has been particularly supportive, offering additional resources, personalised feedback, and continuous motivation throughout the course.

“I am now looking forward to securing a job in the field and continuing my education with my Level 2 bricklaying course. I’m excited about the future and eager to build on the foundation I’ve established. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way!”

Congratulations to Angel – we look forward to seeing what you achieve on your new course in September!
