North Hertfordshire College’s Charlie McNaught and Connor Shield, who are both studying their Level 2 Motor Vehicle diploma, have had an amazing opportunity to complete work experience at McLaren and Aston Martin garages!
The pair had a fantastic opportunity to work alongside Gavin, Aston Martin senior technician, and Steve Hawkins, one of only two master techs for McLaren in the country, during their placements at the Hatfield-based dealerships. This was a great chance for Charlie and Connor to have hands-on experience with the luxury brands.
Grange McLaren and Aston Martin Hatfield are a high-end brand local dealership, and we’re thrilled our students have been able to complete their work experience with this exclusive dealership. The opportunity was arranged by NHC Industry Placement Coordinator Carla, who was supported by aftersales manager Wayne Clark to design the placements. Through consultation and on-site meetings between tutors and dealership managers, the plan came together.
Charlie and Connor were dedicated to learning everything they could from the technicians they were paired with. They were involved in changing gear boxes, oil, and spark plugs amongst other tasks.
The experience has given the students a valuable insight into the importance of the theory they’ve learnt about in class. Learners got real life experience in the workplace of health and safety considerations, including the necessity of wearing work boots and looking presentable, as well as the need to clean up the bay areas after a project. They also experienced workshop expectations and the importance of communication between departments and colleagues.
Charlie McNaught told us: “It was really fun getting to know the techs and learning about Aston Martin, it’s great to get the experience of working for such a big company”.
Connor Shield added: “I had an amazing time at McLaren. I wanted to thank Steve and Wayne for this opportunity. I learnt and experienced the automotive environment and got to work on amazing cars. Steve was happy to develop my skills and enjoyed going into detail with questions. I personally really liked the environment of the workshop and the kind staff”.
