North Hertfordshire College’s Level 2 and 3 Food and Beverage students have been working with a local vineyard for an exciting project, going behind the scenes of the wine and cider-making process!
The group first visited Buntingford’s Four Acres Estate Vineyard in September to take part in harvesting Pinot Noir grapes. Learners worked together to pick the fruit and prepare it for the production process, including pressing the grapes to prepare their own wine. In November, the learners returned to the vineyard for a similar activity around the preparation of cider, picking apples and pressing them to create cider.
This exclusive visit forms an important part of our students’ course and their learning journey. When our students start their careers in the Hospitality sector, they will likely be working in roles where they’re involved in selecting or recommending beverages. Having an understanding of the production process behind wine and cider will enhance their knowledge and leave learners feeling confident and prepared when entering the workplace.
Jess Finlayson, who is studying for her Level 3 Diploma in Hospitality Supervision at North Hertfordshire College, said: “This was an educational and motivational which gave me a great insight on how wine and cider is produced. This means when I am at college, I have a greater understanding of the processes and hard work involved.”
Donna Ryan, one of North Hertfordshire College’s Hospitality tutors, said: “I was so excited to be able to offer the students the opportunity to experience such an engaging trip where they were able to gain an insight on production cider and wine. This will help them progress further with confidence in their course as they now have a greater understanding of everything involved in cider and wine production.”
