Three of North Hertfordshire College’s Catering students supported Michelin-star chefs Andrew Pern and Paul Ainsworth at Pub in the Park in Marlow in May. The students were able to put the skills they’ve learnt on their courses to the test by working alongside professional chefs to prepare a variety of delicious dishes throughout the event.

Pub in the Park has become a staple event in the NHC Catering department’s calendar, with our students regularly lending a hand when the gastropub festival comes to the local area. It’s a great opportunity for our students to shadow professional chefs and learn more about the mechanics of catering at large events – not to mention being an amazing networking opportunity!

Emily Simkins, Level 2 Professional Cookery student at NHC, is no stranger to Pub in the Park having volunteered at the event earlier on in the academic year. She said of the event: “Pub in the Park is always such a thrilling experience. The rush of adrenaline is a great feeling, and it was really good to see some familiar faces walking around the park. Thank you so much to the Star Inn and Andrew Pern for letting me join their tent – it was a blast! I can’t wait for the next time!”

Anthony Gascoigne, one of NHC’s Catering tutors, said: “Working with the organisers of Pub in the Park enables our students to gain experience working in the events sector. It also gives them the opportunity to work alongside Michelin Star chefs in a fun environment. The feedback from the chefs regarding the students was amazing, with the students picking up job offers after college. Thank you again to Pub in the Park, Andrew Pern, and Tom Kerridge for giving North Hertfordshire College’s young chefs the opportunity to shine.”
