Science and Access to Higher Education learners visit biotechnology organisation

Published on March 25, 2026

North Hertfordshire College’s Science and Access to Higher Education learners recently enjoyed an exciting trip to Vernalis’ headquarters to learn about the biotechnology company.

Vernalis collaborates with a wide range of organisations to enable drug discovery programmes through both short- and long-term projects.

Our learners listened to a series of informative presentations delivered by four of Vernalis’ scientists. They each provided insight into the scientific processes carried out in their laboratories and outlined the various career pathways that led to their current roles.

After the presentations, the group went on a tour of the laboratories to check out the state-of-the-art facilities in action, and chat to laboratory staff about their day-to-day responsibilities. Emmanuel, one of NHC’s Access to Higher Education learners, commented: “It was really intriguing to learn that protein could be crystalized in order to view and analyse its composition.”

Aaron, who is studying Science at North Hertfordshire College, added: “Learning about the technology and its use in studying compound interactions with protein, was very interesting.”

This insightful trip not only contextualises our students’ learning but means our tutors can now embed this experience into their teaching delivery.

NHC Maths and Extended Degree in Science Tutor, Linda said: “It was useful to see the maths skills, including programming in python, to adapt into my maths sessions.”
