At North Hertfordshire College, we’re proud to inspire our students with a variety of guest speakers throughout their studies with us. We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Emily Storey, a paramedic community engagement champion for North and East Hertfordshire, to visit our first-year T Level Health learners to share information about an event called ‘Behind the Sirens.’
‘Behind the Sirens’ is a free community careers event hosted by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST). Organised in collaboration with the Hertfordshire Careers Hub, it is primarily designed for young people, young adults, parents, and families to explore professional pathways in healthcare and emergency services.
Through interesting sessions like this, learners gain a greater understanding of the career pathways available to them. This in turn helps them feel more confident when it comes to choosing their work placement opportunities that align with their interests, such as selecting specific wards in which they would like to gain experience.
Thanks to Emily sharing the information about ‘Behind the Sirens’ with our students, many of our learners attended the event and had the chance to meet different professionals linked to the paramedic services. They were able to ask questions and discuss career pathways to have a better understanding of their options after college.
Caitlin, a T Level Health student at North Hertfordshire College, told us: “I went to the ‘Behind the Sirens’ event and I felt it was really well run. It was interesting for many different reasons, including meeting staff at the NHS and hearing how they got to where they are. I really enjoyed it and would recommend people to go if they are thinking about it.”
Cheryl Hall, Deputy Head of Health & Social Care, commented: “The ‘Behind the Sirens’ event was very beneficial for our students. We’re already looking forward to welcoming Emily back to deliver some training in our mock ambulance, a standalone dedicated mock ambulance vehicle on campus, around emergency scenarios.”
Thanks to Emily and the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust for supporting our students!
