As well as our core study programmes, North Hertfordshire College’s students have the opportunity to take part in lots of exciting enrichment activities! These range from engaging sessions designed to support their academic and personal development through to mindfulness and creative sessions aimed at helping students unwind.

Getting creative with Junction 7 🎨
Our ESOL students (English for Speakers of Other Languages) visited Junction 7 Creative for a celebration of Mardi Gras! The students were able to let their creative side run free and designed and created their own masks whilst listening to Latin music. They also looked at the collection of artworks created by local people living in and around the Stevenage area to get further inspiration.
The session was designed to help our students build links in the community, develop resilience and creativity, and support their mental health. Our students certainly agree that they benefitted from the visit, too; Nadir, one of our ESOL students, told us: “It was exciting to do the mask decorating, it was good to see everyone happy and being brought together. Today was the best, getting to start the day with fun.”
Exploring relationships through interactive theatre 🎭
As part of our Personal & Academic Development sessions, our learners watched a play and took part in an interactive workshop about consent, relationships, and sexuality. This experience followed on from our learners’ mandatory harmful sexual behaviour sessions and was a fantastic way to reinforce messages around healthy relationships in a more accessible and engaging way.
One student, who asked to remain anonymous, told us: “I thought it was the best guest speaker we have had so far as it is an important subject, relating to needs of people my age.”
Sally Ellisdon-Page, one of NHC’s Personal & Academic Development tutors, agrees. She said: “I think the students found it empowering because they felt it was realistic and they could deal with the situations.”
Understanding personal safety 👍
Over at our Stevenage campus, our Enrichment team welcomed representatives from Services for Young People, Beacon Hertfordshire Victim Care Centre, and Hertfordshire Constabulary to raise awareness of how to keep safe both at college and when out and about. The groups also provided information about local services which offer support and advice for victims.
As well as sharing information with our own community members, our students also helped give back to the wider area. Millie Watson, one of NHC’s Level 3 Applied Science students, organised a cake sale to raise money for Rape Crisis, raising over £80 during just the lunchtime event!
