In an exciting new initiative starting in the 2023/24 academic year, North Hertfordshire College’s Level 2 Construction students will receive an additional City & Guilds Level 2 Retrofit Awareness qualification alongside their main programme! The qualification is part of our work to support students in building futureproofed skills ahead of starting their careers.
The new sustainability-driven retrofit qualification will teach students how to use modern construction technologies to update older systems, extending their lifespan and reducing carbon emissions. Retrofitting also aligns well with the construction industry’s growing emphasis on eco-conscious design and sustainability.
By arming the next generation of construction professionals with the skills to update environmentally damaging systems with modern technologies, North Hertfordshire College is empowering students to contribute to the global effort to fight climate change.
This is a thrilling development for the local area, too – we’re the first college in Hertfordshire to step into the retrofit training space!
NHC students who complete their Level 2 Electrical, Plumbing, Bricklaying, or Carpentry course will also benefit from insight from industry leaders such as Wates and Morgan Sindall, who will interact with all learners as they work towards their Retrofit Awareness certification. This means that our students will not only have qualifications in their toolkit to give them an edge against other candidates – they’ll also have a greater understanding of the importance of retrofitting and environmental issues facing the sector nationally, regionally, and in the local area.
The programme isn’t limited to 16+ learners, either. To help support other professionals with taking meaningful action against climate change, the Level 2 Retrofit Awareness qualification will also be offered as a short, part-time course for businesses and individual applicants.
Julie King, Head of Construction and Motor Vehicle at NHC’s Engineering & Construction campus, commented: “We are excited to be stepping into the Retrofit space; students from the local area will benefit from this early insight into the changing face of construction. As a direct result, they will enter employment locally with a valuable understanding of retrofit processes relevant to their chosen trade, as well as an employment pathway in the developing retrofit field itself.”
