Ben Carroll, one of North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Professional Cookery students, has gained some practical experience in the kitchens of The Station Pub in Knebworth and has now picked up paid employment!
NHC’s Work Experience team first approached Lloyd Willis, the Director of Platform Five Pubs and The Station Pub, about the opportunity to support a student chef in June 2021. Lloyd confirmed that he was happy to support a student and have them join the talented and dynamic chef team at The Station Pub.
Lloyd mentioned that they don’t allow inflated egos in the team and that everyone gets involved with the jobs at hand – even Head Chef Vicky Goddard gets stuck in with washing the dishes! As part of the placement opportunity, the student chef would be expected to develop several skills and take part in various activities including undertaking any duties necessary for running a safe, successful, and happy kitchen. The student chef would also be reporting directly to Chef Goddard for a true experience of the workplace.
Ben Carroll, who was a Level 2 Professional Cookery student at the time, was keen to apply and successfully interviewed for the position. During his placement, Ben learnt more about what it’s like to cater in a fast-paced kitchen environment and honed the skills he’d learnt at college.
His work ethic and dedication to improving his skills did not go unnoticed by the team at The Station Pub. In fact, Ben was so successful during his placement that he was offered a promotion to Commis Chef and a paid position in the team! Lloyd Willis commented: “Through the building of Ben’s knowledge and capability, the team have seen a growth in his confidence and self-esteem.”
Ben has now progressed to his Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery, a great achievement from the start of his NHC journey as a Level 1 chef. He continues to work as a Commis Chef at The Station Pub, and Lloyd and the team have maintained their support in Ben’s professional development alongside his North Hertfordshire College programme.
Ben told us: “I am really happy to have been offered a permanent job at The Station Pub. The staff are so friendly and supportive and made me feel a part of the team, even when I was on placement. Without the work experience placement, I wouldn’t have gotten this job so I’m really grateful. It’s the starting point of my future career!”
Thank you again to The Station Pub team for supporting the development of our future chefs!
