At North Hertfordshire College, we are committed to supporting our learners to achieve their goals. That’s why we have a team of Inclusion Assistants offering tailored support to learners throughout their time at NHC.
A fantastic example of how this personalised support can benefit our learners is Jake Hobday. Jake joined us in September 2023 and has just completed his Level One Catering programme. Since enrolling at NHC, he’s gone above and beyond by getting stuck into every opportunity presented to him, helping him develop professionally and personally.
We caught up with Jake to hear more about his NHC journey so far:
What is the most interesting part of your course?
“The most interesting part of my course has been developing the specific skills needed to progress into the catering sector. I feel I’m now more able to manage situations and be professional in the restaurant environment. I have really enjoyed the front of house part of the course and feel that I have developed my customer service skills as well as my ability to communicate with others. My tutors and Inclusion Assistants are great to work with and all are knowledgeable at what they do.”
What was the most surprising thing about studying at the College?
“For me, the most surprising thing about college has been how I’ve been treated like an adult. My strengths are recognised, and I have been encouraged to take responsibility for my own learning. This has made me feel empowered and has strengthened my determination to do well.”
How has NHC helped you plan your next steps?
“Doing the course this year has enabled me to explore career opportunities within front of house services. It has helped me gain confidence in my catering skills in general. For example, I served the drinks to staff, parents and students at the student awards held at college. This gave me real-life experience and enabled me to develop my professionalism and confidence. Following my experience at the awards, I successfully applied for a part-time role in a street food restaurant which I am still working at, seven months later.
“In September, I will be progressing to Level 2 Food and Beverage. Following this, I hope to move on to Level 3.”
If you could speak to someone that’s thinking of studying at NHC, what would you say to them?
“I would 100% recommend NHC to anyone that is thinking of studying here. I would also say that if anyone has additional needs, they will be very well supported. Also, if anyone has to re-sit English and maths, I would say don’t panic at all! Our English and maths teachers are very good at what they do.”
Any closing thoughts?
“I was delighted to win the ‘Lecturers Special Commendation’ award for Level 1 Catering recently. This concluded a year that I have enjoyed very much. As I wrote on my Instagram post, “I’m so excited for what the future holds. I’m also excited that I have got at least another two years left studying front of house in this perfect educational environment”.
We’re super proud of Jake’s achievements so far, looking forward to seeing what he gets up to next year!
Could you follow in Jake’s footsteps? You + Hospitality and Catering at NHC = Success. Be the best you. Ever.
