PLUMBING PATHWAY

What you need to know

ABOUT THE PATHWAY

Explore the possibilities of a career in the plumbing sector by joining NHC’s Plumbing pathway. This is your chance to develop the core skills, knowledge, and confidence for success!

HOW AND WHAT WILL I LEARN?

NHC’s Plumbing pathway enables you to learn, develop, and practise the skills required to progress onto other courses, onto an apprenticeship, or into employment as a plumber in the construction sector.

Delivered through a mix of classroom theory sessions and workshop practical sessions, you’ll build the knowledge and confidence to start a successful career.

The units are designed to teach you the underlying principles and practical skills of plumbing, as well as an overview of building technology and key terminology.

Specific topics covered include:

  • Environmental and sustainability measures in a domestic dwelling
  • Above ground drainage
  • Copper, plastic pressure, and low carbon steel pipework
  • Installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems
  • Plumbing science and electrical principles
  • Health and safety and industry practices

As you develop in this pathway, you’ll begin to understand more about the plumbing industry, including:

  • The structure of the construction industry
  • Preparing for on-site working
  • Sanitation, drainage, and central heating
  • Further technical and professional skills

Depending on your course level, you’ll also study an additional qualification in the awareness of Retrofit – the process of updating existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency and functionality. This is a key government strategy in reducing carbon emissions, as well as being a stand-out CV feature for employers.

If you haven’t got them already, you’ll also study your maths and English qualifications, as they are essential in this industry.

On this pathway, you’;ll also further develop your ‘work ready’ skills through relevant work experience, volunteering in the community, or working with an industry partner on a specific project.
