BRICKLAYING PATHWAY

Lay the foundations for a successful career with NHC’s Bricklaying pathway, taught at our Engineering & Construction campus. Learn core skills, theory, and on-site expectations to start the journey to your future trade.

If you’d like to work as a bricklayer in the construction sector, NHC’s Bricklaying pathway is for you. The course will enable you to learn, develop, and practise the skills required to progress onto other courses, onto an apprenticeship, or into employment. Delivered through a mix of classroom theory sessions and practical workshop sessions, this pathway will give you the skills to build a successful career in the bricklaying sector.

The units are designed to teach you the underlying principles and practical skills of bricklaying, as well as an overview of building technology, the principles of construction, and terminology. Specific topics covered include:

• Setting out and building masonry structures up to damp proof course (DPC)
• Carrying out block laying activities
• Carrying out bricklaying activities
• Carrying out cavity walling activities
• Health and safety relevant to the industry

As you develop in this pathway, you’ll begin to understand more about the bricklaying industry, including:

• Principles of construction
• Building cavity walls
• Building solid walls and piers
• Constructing basic arches
• Setting out buildings

Depending on your course level, you’ll also study an additional qualification in the awareness of Retrofit – the process of updating existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency and functionality. This is a key government strategy in reducing carbon emissions as well as being a stand-out CV feature for employers.

If you haven’t got them already, you’ll also study your maths and English qualifications, as they are essential in this industry.

On this pathway, you’ll also further develop your ‘work ready’ skills through relevant work experience, volunteering in the community, or working with an industry partner on a specific project.
