North Hertfordshire College is proud to share that Sophie Blacker, one of NHC’s Level 2 Technical Beauty Therapy students, is competing in this year’s WorldSkills events! These events provide a great opportunity for students to apply the skills and knowledge they’ve learnt on their courses under competitive conditions.
To find the competitors from our Beauty Therapy courses, our students took part in an internal selection process designed by our tutors to mimic WorldSkills heats. Out of this process, Sophie Blacker, Megan Best, and Tia Peirson were chosen to register for the first round of the competition, which took place within NHC’s classrooms.
The three students were then tasked with creating a Day Make-Up look and a manicure using red nail varnish to demonstrate their technical skills and creative flair. Photos of their creations were submitted to the WorldSkills judges for assessment, with Sophie selected to progress to the regional heats – we’ve included Sophie’s creations in this story.
On June 8th, Sophie competed in the regional heats at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College. This time around, Sophie completed a half leg wax, a facial, and another manicure using red nail varnish. Sophie performed well in the heat, receiving excellent general feedback from the judges at the end of the heat alongside some top tips on the expectations for the finals if she gets through to the next stage. The results for the regional heats will be announced in early July, so it’s not long now before Sophie receives her final feedback!
She said of her experience: “I was really nervous about competing, but I’m proud that I’ve gotten through to this round. It’s been a great experience so far.”
Tracey Izzard, Course Team Leader for Level 2 Beauty Therapy at NHC, said: “I am extremely proud of Sophie. Competing in WorldSkills is an amazing experience for her, and it’ll help support her employment opportunities within the Beauty Therapy industry in the future. Sophie has worked so hard and we’re looking forward to the results in July – good luck, Sophie!”
