During the lockdown, it became a challenge for NHC students to complete their work experience hours, with many business and organisations closed during the pandemic, a new virtual approach to work experience was required to give the students the skills and understanding they need for their industry.

Using their expertise and industry knowledge, the work experience team created an interactive 15-hour virtual work experience placement. The programme brought together a series of activities, videos, questions and research tasks that gave students an insight into the world of work and the industry where they hope to work in the future.

Gwen Leonard, studying level 3 business, really valued the virtual work experience she undertook, helping her to understand more about what it will be like when she moves on to her future career:

“The main things I have learnt through [virtual] work experience are that it’s important to experience things outside of your comfort zone when it comes to working, and you not only learn about a certain sector but you also learn about yourself.

“Another important thing I have learnt is that having transferable skills is very useful, as they can be used in whatever work sector I would want to go into. These can include good communication skills and being a patient person.

“I have also learnt that confidence is a key skill to build as it’s something that can open up many opportunities and change how people view you.”
