Our Creative Industries learners have been working with How2Hub to gain valuable work experience and gain an insight into industry good practice!
Doug Trim, managing director of the How2Hub set our TV, Film & VFX students a professional brief to work in small teams and produce a set of short careers videos aimed at his community audience – primary school-aged children and their families – with the purpose of providing engaging, easy-to-understand information about workplaces, careers and jobs in our local area. The videos aim to enable children to make informed choices about learning, school and work as they grow up.
Each mini crew worked on pre-production tasks to plan shots, prepare interview questions, equipment and subject call sheets before making their way to film on location at different businesses and organisations – like a real client filming commission! Some of the businesses involved in the latest round of films are Letchworth Garden Shed, Body Ethics gym, Neena Odedra and FootPro Podiatry.
Once filming wrapped, it was back to college to use the dedicated Creative Media suites and industry software to complete post-production editing, sound synchronisation, addition of soundtracks, graphics and so on to create the finalised products within agreed delivery deadlines.
Doug reviewed the submissions with his subject organisations before the final deliverables were signed off, offering an opportunity for a second cut where necessary. This has been a great opportunity to embed evaluative skills and quality standards for our budding film industry professionals within the project. It also provided a realistic model ensuring all clients are happy with the message and mood of videos before sign-off – as per industry practice!
Students’ achievements with How2Hub were celebrated at a final employer presentation and feedback event. There were relaxed sessions where everyone was able to share thoughts and reflect on the experience and improvements to inform future projects.
Five submissions were created in the first round of films which enabled the launch of the How2Hub careers resources library and additional clips created during the further phase of the project have now been added to this.
Now that he knows how to go about a venture like this, student Daryl Osborn is planning to work on a further filming & editing mini-project for How2Hub in his spare time this year, collaborating with the Arriva Bus Company. What a great CV-building experience for him – good luck Daryl!
Taylor McGibbon said: “I learned many valuable skills about media production, in a realistic environment, especially regarding teamwork, and communication”.
Rowan Moore said: “this placement made me realise that this is the right career path for me and gave me some good experience working on a shoot for a promotional video for the company that we did it for”.
Following the success of their previous project, Level 3 TV Film & VFX Tutor, Ryan Beman, is already planning next year’s placements to create more educational films for How2Hub featuring new industries and jobs! The company has also held discussions with NHC’s Industry Placements team about the new T Level qualification in Business Management & Administration with a view to hosting placement students in the future.
