NHC CATERING STUDENTS WIN BIG AT THE BRITISH STUDENT CULINARY COMPETITION

Published on November 5, 2020

NHC catering students are celebrating after winning big at a UK culinary competition, scooping an amazing 31 awards including 21 Golds, 3 Silver and 7 Bronze. On Tuesday 27th October 2020, the students took part in The British Student Culinary Competition, one of the largest live culinary competitions in the UK, held by Craft Guild of Chefs. Students were also given priority for future opportunities due to their high participation and commitment to the competition.

The popular event is growing in stature and is a fantastic platform for all chefs to get a taste of competition experience, with a chance to score big with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards to be won.

Adapting to current times, the competition was held online. Our catering students competed in a socially distanced environment at the Hart Kitchens on our Hitchin Campus with an on-going Livestream via Zoom.

Our catering students competed in several different classes, including:

  • Gateau assembly and decorating
  • Cupcake decorating
  • Cutting chicken for sauté
  • Vegetable cuts
  • Table lay-up based on fine dining
  • Napkin folds
  • Bread shaping and moulding

Each competition class had its own judging criteria with judges critiquing independently.

Our Level 2 Professional Cookery student, Paris Bodner said:

“Having the judges watch me and critic what I do pushed me to want to participate in a lot more competitions as I love the feedback! The silence and concentration in the room helped me to produce my bread rolls as I wanted to and couldn’t have been happier with the results.”

Catering & Hospitality Lecturer, Anthony Gascoigne said:

“The students enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to compete against students from other colleges in this online culinary competition. Experiences like this are valuable in inspiring and developing skills, especially under the current restrictions. Many thanks to The Craft Guild of Chefs for giving the students the opportunity to express themselves in a competitive environment.”
