North Hertfordshire College’s E3 Sports learners have been applying their maths skills to a challenge that’s out of this world!
As part of their maths lessons, students designed and built their own rockets and space buggies. They were then joined by Jason Gilmore (Additive Manufacturing Expert) and Sam Wilson (Propulsion Engineer) from Airbus for a practical session, where learners launched their rockets and practiced measuring the individual distance that each rocket had travelled. This was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their learning in maths and demonstrate how they could apply this learning to real challenges.
Our learners also had the opportunity to learn more about space and rockets, thanks to a discussion session with Sam and Jason. There was even the opportunity to ask questions about how rockets get into space – perhaps our learners will be able to apply their top tips to their next rocket-building challenge!
Lucy Deamer, one of North Hertfordshire College’s E3 Sports students, told us: “It was really interesting to hear what [Jason and Sam] had to say about our planet and space. It was fun to launch our rockets to see who won!”
Tobey Noel, another of NHC’s E3 Sports students, agrees. He said: “Thank you for showing us the in’s and out’s of the satellite production and answering all my questions, providing us with useful information about the space program, and letting us see and feel the 3D printed satellite parts/models.”
