North Hertfordshire College’s Supported Interns flexed their entrepreneurial skills and ran a popular sweet stall as part of Stevenage Borough Council’s Halloween event in the town centre!
The students started the process by coming up with ideas for what they could sell at the event. To celebrate the spooky season, the group decided to make and sell cones of sweets in surgical gloves for a creepy sweet treat. With their product plan in place, the interns then completed market research to work out the price of similar products and help them decide on the price of their own sweets. As they were going to be selling food items, the group also learnt about the importance of allergy awareness to make sure their products were safe to be sold.
The interns also learnt about basic bookkeeping to round off their business understanding. This knowledge helped them keep track of their profit from the event – essential information for any business, but especially for our Supported Interns who will be using the funds to help plan their upcoming Christmas fundraiser!
The event was a success overall, with our Supported Interns enjoying the opportunity to get creative and bring their learning to life. Emma, one of NHC’s Supported Interns, told us: “It was a really good and fun experience.”
Carlie Dinsdale, one of NHC’s Job Coaches in our Supported Studies department, agrees with Emma. Reflecting on the experience overall, she commented: “It was a great experience for the students, and the perfect way to get them ready for running the Urban Arts Festival in May.”
