Two of North Hertfordshire College’s Supported Internship students, Zac and Bradley, have been volunteering with Garden House Hospice!
As part of their placements, Zac and Bradley supported the Hospice’s trading operations in the Distribution Centre. The Distribution Centre is where activities such as sorting donations for shops, pat testing, running online sales, and packing orders takes place, with Zac and Bradley each getting stuck in with their own tasks within the centre.
Zac, who worked in the eBay team, told us: “I did the packaging of sold items and was even involved with the listing sometimes. It was really good! I was nervous when I first started but I pushed myself and got on with it, and I really enjoyed it and felt comfortable. Everyone has been so nice; it’s a very supportive group of people in a very relaxed environment. I was able to go at my own pace, listen to the radio, and get on with my work.”
Bradley worked in a different role to Zac and was part of the book processing team. Reflecting on the work he did in the team, he commented: “I did book scanning which meant I was able to find what the donated books are worth. It was good fun! Everyone has been so nice, friendly, and helpful. They helped me to log in, go to the right website, and then to swap over to other websites. I’ve enjoyed the way that the jobs always swap over, and all the different things to do. All the variety means I didn’t get bored.”
The pair are both very positive about their volunteering work, saying they would recommend the experience to others in the community.
Aimee and Richard, who currently work with Garden House Hospice, told us: “We were so thrilled to know that Zac and Bradley felt so positively about their time as volunteers, without people like them the trading team wouldn’t be complete. We thank them both and wish them all the luck for the future. We are eager to continue this partnership and look forward to welcoming new students soon.”
