North Hertfordshire College students, Poppy Andrews and Emily Simkins, supported Michelin star chef Andrew Pern at the recent Pub In The Park festival in St Albans.
Pub In The Park is the biggest food and music festival tour in the UK and offers the chance for guests to sample high-quality dishes from a range of restaurants. The event features pop-up stalls from award-winning pubs and restaurants and is described as a celebration of British pubs.
Emily described the event as “a perfect opportunity to experience working with Michelin star food and meeting chefs I look up to. It was a day full of learning, food and fun!”
Working closely with Andrew Pern, Poppy and Emily experienced what it is like to cook and serve food in a festival environment under the direction of a highly experienced and successful chef. The pair also had the opportunity to meet and network with some of the famous names in attendance, including James Martin, Candice Brown, and Tom Kerridge.
Andrew was impressed with Poppy and Emily’s work ethic, commenting on how hard they worked. He even offered the pair some employment opportunities, to help further their experience in the catering field.
Both students enjoyed the experience of volunteering at Pub In The Park and are proud of their work.
Poppy said: “I had the most wonderful opportunity to cook for and alongside Michelin star chef Andrew Pern. It was a busy day serving over 1000 small plates. All the food was exquisite and full of strong and well-balanced flavours.”
Catering tutor Anthony Gascoigne said: “To meet the likes of Tom Kerridge and James Martin really inspires the students to want to achieve and raises aspirations. The fast-paced cooking is great preparation for them to develop working at speed and under pressure. Poppy and Emily did us proud.”
