North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Sports & Exercise Science and Sports Coaching students took part in an exclusive careers GRIT session with a representative from Les Mills!
Les Mills as an organisation is focused on creating a fitter planet by encouraging people to think positively about fitness. The company designs a range of workout programs from Bodypump (weights) to yoga, martial arts, and GRIT (high-intensity interval training), that support participants of different fitness levels to take the next step in their fitness journey.
NHC’s students got up close and personal with the GRIT session format, thanks to a guest session from Les Mills Presenter Trainer Emily Wallis. As well as helping our students to understand about the physical activities and content involved in GRIT, students could see first-hand the work that goes into running a session and motivating participants to get involved. Students also learnt more about careers in the personal training sector and Les Mills through Emily’s presentation and Q&A session, opening their eyes to the possibilities for their own careers.
As well as feeling physically fit, learners left the session feeling inspired and with a greater understanding of the benefits of fitness sessions not only for participants but for the trainers also.
Emily said: “Being a Les Mills presenter builds confidence and gives individuals a range of life skills through teaching adults. It’s important for us to visit young people in training institutions like North Hertfordshire College so that we can demonstrate what Les Mills is and what students can do with it. This was a masterclass designed so that students can physically enjoy it. The Les Mills ethos is for a fitter planet – move as many and as much as we can, so it’s great to see so many young people get involved and join in.”
The session has certainly opened our learners’ eyes to the possibilities within the sector! Annabel Row, a Level 3 Sports Coaching student at NHC, said: “I enjoyed the session as the exercises were adjustable which was important to me as I currently have an injury, but I was still able to participate. The session has inspired me for my future career in sports rehabilitation, as I learnt about exercises that would be useful in a sporting environment. It was great to have the chance to ask an expert about this too!”
Georgie Burns, Deputy Head of Curriculum for Sports, Public Services, Business, and Travel at North Hertfordshire College said: “We had a truly brilliant morning with the GRIT sessions for our Sports students. What a great opportunity for our learners to experience a Les Mills workout on our campus. This has opened our learners’ eyes to consider their next steps in the fitness industry after they finish their NHC courses.”
Thank you again to Les Mills for working with our students!
