Sports Learners Help Local Care Home Community Get Moving

Published on June 19, 2026

As part of their ‘Getting People Active’ and ‘Working with Others’ units, North Hertfordshire College’s Sports learners have been helping Nightingale House Care Home residents get moving.

Throughout the project, learners have delivered some low-impact fun sessions for residents including magnetic darts, bowls, and dancing, all while providing lots of tea and coffee to keep their energy levels high!

Our Sports learners understanding of inclusive practice has been strengthened by delivering activity sessions to an older age group. They communicated effectively with residents, using their empathy to adjust wording, tone, and delivery to suit residents’ needs.

We’re so proud of how well our learners supported residents through each activity. The sessions have had a positive impact on both care home residents and our students.

The Nightingale House residents enjoyed interacting with learners and made the most of each of the activities. Caroline, the Assistant Manager at Nightingale House, said: “A big thank you from all of us at the Day Service. The visit from the Sports students at NHC was fantastic, they got everyone moving, laughing, and trying new things.

“It was wonderful to see such genuine connection across generations. Our older people absolutely loved it! We look forward to doing it again.”

Drew, who teaches Sports at North Hertfordshire College, added: “Watching the Level 1 Sport learners connect, support, and genuinely brighten someone’s day was something special.

“The residents at Nightingale House weren’t just participants – they were smiling, laughing, and fully involved. The learners showcased an immense amount of maturity, empathy, and enthusiasm in ensuring those in care had a wonderful day. A truly proud moment.”

Learners are now working away on their structured reflective accounts of their work at Nightingale House, ready to apply what they’ve learned to their Sports course.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to the team and residents of Nightingale House for their continued support of our learners. It’s through these partnerships that we’re able to help our young people develop professionally and personally, while also making a real difference within the local community.

Could you follow in the footsteps of our learners? Be the best you. Ever. Start your Sports career at NHC.
