Work placements are a core part of the student experience at North Hertfordshire College, and this year the Barbering pathway celebrated a successful new partnership with Society Barbering.
NHC’s Barbering tutors reached out to local employers in the local area to invite them to participate in this pilot, which would support students in learning practical skills and welcome them into the industry. We were delighted to launch a six-week industry work placement with Society Barbering as a result!
Learners gained valuable industry insight through the placements, which helped reinforce many of the key skills taught in the Level 2 Barbering course. These included exposure to industry-led techniques and current trends, the development of workplace readiness and professional practice, opportunities for peer skill-sharing, and a strong focus on employability and career progression.
Our Barbering students really enjoyed the opportunity and rose to the challenge, all whilst gaining valuable experience for their CVs. As a direct outcome of the work placements, 81% of participating students have now secured employment within the barbering industry alongside their college hours – a brilliant result! Three students have even been employed at Society Barbering.
Learners returned from their placements more focused, more motivated, and equipped with valuable new skills. They’re also sharing their insights with each other, sharing skills and advice as they support each other to grow and develop.
Ed, one of NHC’s Barbering students, told us: “I really enjoyed my time at Society Barbering in Shefford. It has made me understand and enjoy working as part of a team. I gained new confidence with being able to work with and talk to real life clients. I have also since secured a part-time job with them and once qualified will be working full time with them in the new Baldock branch when it opens.”
Lisa Cook, who teaches Barbering at North Hertfordshire College, commented: “Our Barbering students at NHC have truly thrived during their six-week industry work placements. This invaluable experience has given them real-world insight into the profession while significantly developing their technical skills. They returned to college full of enthusiasm and confidence, eager to showcase their new abilities to both staff and peers. The transformation has been clear to see — with noticeable growth in professionalism, mindset, and self-evaluation — preparing them to succeed in the industry. “
Thank you to Society Barbering for helping our up-and-coming barbers to develop their skills!
