What better way for our Health and Social Care learners to build their understanding of professional practice and disciplinary processes than by hearing directly from a former Judge? Yes, that’s right – our Level 2 Preparing to Care and Level 3 Health & Social Care students enjoyed a fascinating guest speaker session with the Rt Hon. Sir Stephen Irwin about his experiences!
During the presentation, Sir Stephen shared stories of scientific and medical cases from his time as a barrister, Queen’s Counsel (QC), and a judge. In his career, Sir Stephen was involved in a range of different cases including medical negligence, service people affected by ‘battle shock’ and/or PTSD, and representing families impacted by BSE after consuming infected food.
Our learners listened intently as Sir Stephen used his knowledge of real-life cases to advise learners about their future roles and responsibilities as healthcare professionals, including the importance of following professional standards and organisational policies and procedures. The session also included the opportunity for learners to discuss ethical issues such as conflicts of interest and dilemmas about duty of care, and the necessary skills and qualities needed to be able to handle these situations.
Mary Nnadozie, one of North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Health & Social Care learners, commented: “It was really interesting to hear about real cases and how we can learn from them to improve our own practice when we start our careers.”
Rounding off the session, Sir Stephen reflected on his own experiences to provide advice on how to look after your mental wellbeing. He also stressed the importance of seeking help at an early stage – advice that will be crucial for our learners when they face distressing situations in their future careers.
Cheryl Hall, Course Team Leader for Level 3 Health and Social Care, told us: “Sir Stephen Irwin’s vast experience really brought to life the importance of policies, procedures, and professional standards within the sector and the impact failings can have.”
Thank you to Sir Stephen Irwin for taking the time to visit our learners!
