North Hertfordshire College’s Public Services learners have enjoyed a range of guest speaker sessions and experiences to help them explore their many future career possibilities!
Back in November, our Public Services learners were visited by Rob Merry, Community Safety Manager for National Railway. Our learners were hooked by Rob’s interactive VR experience exploring safety around trains. The demonstration linked to Unit 2 – Behaviour and Discipline within the Public Services course, discussing the importance of discipline within the services with a focus on self-discipline around railways.
Level 3 Protective Services Student Rep, Finn, commented:
“I really enjoyed the National Rail VR experience. It was something completely different to what I have done before. It was especially a new experience for those who have not used a VR headset before. It was a nice way to engage with the important lesson we are being taught about safety near the railways.”
We were also delighted to welcome Pat, a British Transport Police officer who delivered a talk about the various roles and responsibilities expected when serving. Our learners were particularly impressed by their regular use of drones to catch local offenders and prevent trespassing on the tracks.
Public Services Tutor, Adam Newland, added:
“It was great to have Rob and Pat come to the College from Network Rail and the British Transport Police. It really opened up our eyes to the dangers of trespassing and how common it is. The way it was shown gave a new approach on how students learn. Also, Pat gave an insightful discussion about work in the British Transport Police which really gave further ideas and opportunities for the learners’ future career paths.”
Visits from key industry personnel such as Rob and Pat allow our learners to explore the diverse career paths available to them within the Public Services industry. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to share industry knowledge and experience with our budding public service officers.
