North Hertfordshire College’s Protective Services students recently travelled to Krakow, Poland for an educational trip about the effects of the Holocaust.
Over the course of their two-day visit, our students explored the Jewish Quarter and heard moving first-hand accounts from the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, who was awarded the Righteous Among the Nations medal. The students also had the chance to visit significant historical landmarks, including the Jewish Ghettos, several memorials, and the haunting sites of Auschwitz and Birkenau.
Harry, one of our students, told us: “The experience was eye-opening and I found it challenging to fully comprehend the facts and figures. We visited so many places during our trip and it was very impactful to see them for ourselves. The walking tour of the former Ghetto was both informative and very emotional, and this trip has been a sobering experience.”
The students gained in-depth insight into the history behind these locations from their expert tour guide. They also developed their understanding of the lasting impact of World War II and political regimes on our world.
The experience has left a deep impression on our students. Finn, who is completing his Protective Services diploma with NHC, told us: “One of the most impactful moments was hearing from the Righteous Among the Nations medal recipient about their experience and the realities of living under Nazi rule. Visiting Auschwitz was also very moving. Having studied these events in school and now seeing them in person has been a powerful experience.”

It’s a journey we are keen to offer again to our students in the future.”
