North Hertfordshire College’s new Class and Curriculum Representatives recently enjoyed their first Student Rep conference of the 2023/24 academic year. Through a combination of networking, training, and discussions, our Student Reps have now got an even stronger understanding about their work over the next few months.
The conference was opened with speeches from NHC’s Principal Kit Davies and Student Governor Bryce Vorster, exploring the responsibilities involved with the Representative role. Claire Anderson-Byrne, NHC’s Deputy Head of Student Experience, also shared details of the new structure of the Student Rep system.
Our new Student Reps then took part in a training session on Active Listening and Effective Questioning with our Head of Teaching, Learning & Quality, Kerry Pritchett. Kerry’s session highlighted the importance of paying attention and withholding judgement to give our student reps the skills to really listen to what their fellow classmates are communicating to them, and in turn build a greater college for everyone. The training has helped our learners to feel more confident in their roles and are now ready to take on the next stage of their Student Voice journey.
We’re happy to say that our Student Reps enjoyed the conference experience and having the opportunity to complete the train. Harley Hudson, one of our Level 2 Motor Vehicle students, told us: “I really enjoyed the talks from senior management and leaders; they came across very friendly and professional. I now have a better understanding of what is expected of me as a Student Class Rep.”
Jason Briers, Student Engagement Officer at North Hertfordshire College, commented: “The conference was a fantastic showcase of our Student Reps, who were all engaged and enjoying the training. The listening skills and questioning training were brilliant in helping guide the reps with how to carry out their Student Rep activity. There was a great buzz in the hall from the Reps having the chance to mix together.”
