Inside NHC: Half-Term Round-Up, October 2023

Published on November 8, 2023

At North Hertfordshire College, we’re proud to see the many amazing opportunities our learners take part in, both inside and outside the classroom. The first half-term of the 2023/24 academic year got off to a brilliant start with our curriculums providing some fantastic experiences to our learners.

Check out our favourites in our half-term round-up!

Kicking off progression plans in Sports & Exercise Science ⚽

In Sports & Exercise Science, our learners enjoyed an engaging talk from a representative from the UCFB (University Campus of Football Business) about their available courses. The talk covered the different sports courses available at the university, the placement opportunities included in the programmes, and the student life experience for their learners. Joe O’Dea, Course Team Leader and Sports Tutor at NHC, commented: “The talk included plenty of things for our students to take away and consider once they’ve finished their qualification at NHC.”

NHS professionals inspire NHC Health & Social Care learners 💡

It’s all systems go over in Health & Social Care, with learners across our programmes completing a variety of workshop activities over the half-term. The careers sessions have helped learners to explore career pathways in midwifery, physiotherapy, and anaesthetics to name a few.

Our learners are also a part of the NHS Hertfordshire & West Essex Health & Care Academy, where they are building their skills and confidence ahead of the next step in their own care journey.

Creative Arts design grand plans for the future 🏦

Learners across our Creative Arts courses discovered some of the opportunities that are open to them after their NHC courses, thanks to a guest speaker session from NHC alum Akyra Magadeh! Akyra completed his Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at NHC in 2017 before going on to study Architecture at Central St Martin’s (part of the University of the Arts London).

As well as talking about his experience as an Architectual Assistant, Akyra also shared his top tips for students: utilise college and university resources well, and collaboration is everything!

Thank you to Akyra for sharing your experience with the next generation of creatives.

Hairdressing & Beauty learners secure film gig 🎬

There are some real superstars over in our Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy department – our Level 2 and 3 learners have been offered the opportunity to work as MUAs for the film One for the Road, produced by Inclusivity Films! This is an amazing opportunity for the learners to apply their skills to the challenge of a film set, working with other production teams to create looks and keep the makeup consistent across scenes.

We can’t wait to see the finished looks!

Science students share skills around the globe 🗺

We welcomed the St Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to the UK to our SITEC labs for a demonstration of DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and vaccine manufacturing from our Science learners. The day also included a livestreamed lesson to students in St Kitts and Nevis as part of our continued connection with schools in the islands.

What a brilliant chance for our learners to apply their skills to a new challenge and inspire the next generation of scientists!

Level 3 Chef Liv competes for sweet scholarship 🎂

Over the half-term break, Level 3 chef Liv Lewis competed in the finals of the Master Chefs of Great Britain’s David Lyell Scholarship in the Dessert Chef of the Year 2023 category. We’re proud to report that Liv was the runner-up in her heat and was awarded £100, a signed Claire Clark book, some champagne, and a box of macarons as a prize for her hard work. She will also appear in the next issue of the Master Chefs of Great Britain’s magazine.

Congratulations on your achievement, Liv!

We can’t wait to see where the next half-term will take our learners.
