NHC Student Case Study: Amin

Published on December 17, 2025

At North Hertfordshire College, we deliver English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses for those who would like to improve their English language skills for work and everyday life.

Amin is currently completing an ESOL course with us, we wanted to catch up with him to find out how he’s getting on so far…

When did you move to the UK?

“I’ve been here for a year and four months. I spent one year without any knowledge of there being a college close to me – I played football by myself every day at the back of the Novotel.”

What has been the most interesting part of college so far?

“Football training and matches! I was surprised that this is a big college! The study days are longer than in my home country, too.”

What are some of your favourite experiences from your time at NHC?

“There’s been lots of good enrichment trips. When I go to football games this helps me with my English, and with meeting new people.”

If you could speak to someone that’s thinking of studying at NHC, what would you say to them?

“I say come and study! If you listen to your teacher well, you will learn quickly. When I don’t understand something, every teacher helps me.”

Do you have friends from across the world in your class, and what is that like?

“I’m friends with students from Eritrea and Somalia – everyone is friends in the class.”

And finally, where do you hope to be in five years’ time?

“I want to be a football player and have better English. I want to complete all my dreams and hope that my life is easy.”
