Published on June 18, 2021

North Hertfordshire College (NHC) catering student, Jamie Farrow has secured a full-time role at Michelin-starred gastro pub, The Star Inn, following a successful work experience placement at the restaurant based in Yorkshire.

The restaurant, under chef Andrew Pern currently has one Michelin star and serves up ‘modern Yorkshire’ food made primarily from locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

Level 3 Professional Cookery student, Jamie Farrow completed a week-long residential work experience placement along with fellow Professional Cookery student, Josh Davies.

Talking about his overall experience and achievement Jamie said: “Whilst at The Star I completed various duties in the kitchen. There were many things I enjoyed whilst there but what I enjoyed the most was working as part of a well led and motivated team, all working towards one goal.

My placement at The Star will greatly give me the best start possible in my career, leading to future opportunities. By [my lecturer] Anthony having these connections within the industry it greatly benefits the students within the catering department to give them the best possible start.”

Josh Davies said: “The week at The Star was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a kitchen. I got to work with some amazing chefs and learned how a Michelin star restaurant works. What I’ve learnt will help me progress into the best chef possible and hopefully, be able to be back working there soon.”

Andrew Pern, chef patron and Steve Smith, chef director could not speak more highly about the two students. They were impressed with their attitude, work ethic and how they applied themselves during their week-long placement.

Andrew Pern said: “Another two good students from North Herts College. Jamie and Josh have had a great time and have worked hard. Jamie will be joining us on a full-time basis and Josh potentially in a couple of months. Well done.”

This incredible achievement follows on from the students’ lecturer, Anthony Gascoigne’ ‘Teacher of the Year’ TES FE Award win last month.

Talking about the students Anthony success, Anthony said: “The experience Jamie and Josh has given them great insight into the operations of a top-class kitchen. The skills learnt will undoubtedly set them up for the future. It is great to work closely with employers like The Star and really endorses what we are trying to achieve with the students.”
