In the latest instalment of our Meet the Team series, we met with Zena Ellis from North Hertfordshire College’s Creative and Performing Arts department! Zena is one of our Course Team Leaders for Art and Design and has been with the College for 7 years. We sat down with her to find out more about her journey into teaching, and why she enjoys teaching at NHC in particular!
What inspired you to become a teacher?
“I became a teacher because I love working with young people. I really love art and design and being able to share this passion with young people is great, especially when you get to see students’ progress throughout the course. I love seeing them do things they didn’t know they could do.”
What has been a highlight of your time at NHC?
“One of my biggest highlights is the carnival project that we do year. It’s where our art students come together to look at the history and heritage of carnivals, and then produce their own designs and artwork based on what they’ve learnt. People get so creative, they always come up with ideas that I would never think of.
“I’m also really proud of the exhibition we do each year. All of our students take part from every course! It’s hard work, but parents get to come in and see all the progress that has been made throughout the year.”
If you could say anything to someone that’s looking at studying art and design at NHC, what would it be?
“You get to explore art and design in a supportive environment, our team are great at helping you find the style and form that works best for you. Our students always have a lot of fun, and they get to take part in so many great experiences.”
Any closing thoughts?
“There are so many transferable skills that students can learn on our courses, it’s great! I can’t wait for more students to come along and join.”
