Did you know that at North Hertfordshire College, as well as having a great team of teachers and support staff, we also have an amazing team of Personal and Academic Development Coaches working in each curriculum area?

Meet Shannon, who works with NHC’s Supported Studies students as a Personal and Academic Development Coach! Shannon plays an important role in helping our students to develop core skills and knowledge in topics such as health and wellbeing, to help them achieve great things when they finish their studies.

Find out more about Shannon’s journey into working with NHC and her current role in her Meet the Team interview!

What do you do in your role as a Personal and Academic Development Coach?

“I deliver online sessions to students on our Supported Studies programmes. These lessons have a strong focus on health, wellbeing, and employability so that students can take these transferable skills into a workplace. We particularly focus on health and wellbeing so that our students are happy and healthy.”

What inspired you to apply for this role?

“My background is in supporting individuals with Special Educational Needs, so when I saw this role being advertised, I thought: ‘this is perfect for me!’ I’m passionate about education and seeing students succeed.

“This is my third role within North Hertfordshire College’s Supported Studies department. I first joined NHC as a Specialist Learning Support Assistant in 2019, just after I finished college myself. From there, I moved into a role as a Pastoral Coordinator within the department. I gained a lot of experience in both roles, which I’ve now transferred to my new role as SEND PAD coach, which I’m loving.”

What do you enjoy the most about working with NHC?

“I enjoy coming to work each day. The Supported Studies department, as well as the whole of the wider college, are a great team full of passionate individuals that love what they do. We are part of a community here, and it’s a friendly and supportive place to work.”

Looking back at your work so far, what has been a highlight of your time at NHC?

“A highlight of my time working with NHC has to be seeing the students achieve; there is no better feeling than seeing students progress and achieve great things. I love supporting students in their learning and development and seeing the enthusiasm they have for coming into college. Seeing students progress into voluntary or paid employment and doing the things they love is amazing.

“They inspire me every day!

“Managers also support any professional development you may want to uptake. For example, alongside my full-time role here, I’m also studying towards my Level 5 Diploma in Education here at the College. It’s given me lots of knowledge and experience that I can use throughout my teaching career.”

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is thinking of joining NHC, what would it be?

“If you are thinking of applying, then I would say: ‘yes, do it!’. Whether you join us as a student or a member of staff, at NHC you will be surrounded by supportive and helpful staff. We are all passionate, friendly, and want the best for our students. You can feel a real sense of community within the building.”
