As well as teaching classes, Rakhee helps to keep the department running smoothly by planning amazing opportunities for her students.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
“Strangely enough, I became a teacher almost by accident. I was working as an IT Trainer when I received a phone call from an old friend who worked in the library at a local college suggesting that I should come and teach IT. I had thought about a career in teaching and had always been aware of the important and unforgettable role a good teacher plays in young persons’ lives. I have been in teaching ever since.
“I became an FE lecturer at a college in London, where I taught a number of IT courses, as well as maths and English, and also took on team leader responsibilities and a form tutor role. Now, I’m working at North Hertfordshire College as the Deputy Head of Computing, Networking & Design.”
What do you enjoy most about working at North Hertfordshire College?
“I enjoy working with young people and interacting with them, helping and watching them improve and develop into young adults. I also enjoy working alongside like-minded colleagues and have made many good friends in my teaching career so far.
“A highlight for me is when I see a student achieve their full potential. This never fails to please me, and I hope I can contribute in some small way to making this happen.”
Thinking specifically about your courses, what makes them stand out for students?
“I think what stands out about courses in IT at NHC is their obvious relevance to the world of work and career opportunities, as well as how they prepare students for further study. Much of my time recently has been spent developing links with local businesses and we now have a network of employers who attend and take part in student group activities, provide guest speaker sessions, and offer work placements to our students.
“We do everything we can to ensure that students are on the right courses, that they will achieve their potential and that they will enjoy their time at NHC.”
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is thinking of studying at NHC, what would it be?
“My advice to anyone thinking of studying at NHC would be ‘don’t hesitate’. As well as enjoying your time at college, you will be learning vital skills, improving your prospects of further study and your employability.”
