At North Hertfordshire College, we’re not only dedicated to providing a well-rounded education, but also to create support systems that are accessible for all students. Student Services have all the answers, and who better to talk about this with than Support Coach Michelle Ksher?
What inspired you to become a Support Coach?
“I myself was a vulnerable teen, and the influence from supportive adults such as my youth worker (who I am still in contact with) helped me realise I had a desire to help people. I want to pay forward the attention I was given to the students at North Hertfordshire College.
“My favourite quote is ‘you become the person that you needed as a child’, and it continues to be my driving force for working with and helping students. Nothing is better than seeing the small changes in students who often start out unwilling but eventually allow themselves to envision a career in a sector they enjoy.”
What did you do before you joined NHC?
“My work has always involved ‘bodies’, from being a student support worker in a secondary school to helping with the elderly and end of life care. I have also lived with many of the people I care for, including a residential home for young people struggling with addiction as well as living with families who have struggled with teens.
“Each of my jobs have taught me valuable life lessons and equipped me with the skills I now use at North Hertfordshire College such as patience and calmness.”
What do you enjoy most about working in Student Services?
“I love my team; we are a well-oiled machine who all value each other and the students. Each one of us puts everything into the role which creates a cohesive group where we’re all equipped with the right tools to help students where necessary.
“More importantly, the students make this job what it is. I have never felt the Sunday dread because I truly enjoy my job. I find a deep fascination in what each student has to say – specifically because it can be so random. Despite loving routines, I find such joy in never knowing what will happen each day.”
What has been a highlight of your time at NHC?
“The most rewarding moments of my job are when the students who faced challenges find a career path they see a future in and feel excitement for. It is not one specific moment but seeing the overall progress – no matter how small it may be – of troubled students and where they go with their lives.”
If you could give one piece of advice to a student who is thinking of joining NHC, what would it be?
“NHC is a great place to transition from secondary school, you will be treated and respected as an adult. Use the support provided – that’s what Student Services is for.”
Any closing thoughts?
“Student Services is a department that will always be crucial in helping students thrive during their college years. I know it is not easy to shine a light on this department as we often work behind closed doors but it’s highly important that students know they can use our facilities, and get the support they need!”
