Here at North Hertfordshire College, our Estates team play an essential part in ensuring the college runs smoothly and without issues, we couldn’t function without this important team! We managed to talk to Assistant Caretaker Micheal Gurd to gain valuable insight into what the role entails:
What inspired you to work in Caretaking and how did you get to this role?
“I have always liked hands-on jobs, I worked at a tennis club in London for 6 years before this role. Throughout my time there, I had to do lots of cleaning and washing towels which might be boring for some, but I found it quite enjoyable.
“After this job finished, I had no idea what career I wanted to pursue. I saw an advert for a caretaker position at North Hertfordshire College and what drew me to the job was the availability of part-time work and flexible hours. The idea of working both outside and inside was very intriguing. I applied for the job, and I have been working here ever since.”
What do you enjoy the most about working at NHC?
“My favourite part of this job is the teamwork we have within our department. We all have a good laugh with each other which makes doing the job so much easier. Us caretakers are a tight knit group who all love a bit of banter and bacon rolls!”
What has been a highlight of your time at NHC?”
“I have loved making the campus look nice, from painting the walls to planting flowerbeds in the garden. Making the college a beautiful place makes it a more enjoyable environment for everyone, and it brings me pride to help with that.
“I personally like to keep the grounds tidy all year which can be a little bit tough in the winter months but I’m always up for the challenge.”
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is thinking of joining NHC, what would it be?
“Take all the opportunities you’re given and put your all into them. I think it’s great when people take pride in what they do and give everything a go where they can.”
Any closing thoughts?
“It’s been a pleasure to see the refurbishments within the college and to watch it evolve over time. It has been brought up to date and I love nothing more than being able to look after the amazing changes and keep it all tidy so people can thrive in this atmosphere.”
