Laura is our Deputy Head of Additional Learning Support. She brings her passion for supporting learners to help them make progress towards their dreams and futures and coordinates additional help for those who need it.

Can you tell us a bit about your career journey so far?
“I first joined North Hertfordshire College after graduating from university in 2004. My first role with the College was in the Learning Resources department, before I moved into a combined Student Services and ALS role. I then moved into ALS completely in 2010, becoming an ALS Coordinator in 2014.
“Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to develop professionally and I became the Deputy Head of ALS in February 2025. This is a position that I have aspired to reach for several years, and I was delighted to be given the job. ALS is an amazing team to be part of and I feel excited to now be in this new role as we move forwards with our support of our students.
“I love working with the students and seeing them progress and enjoy their time here. It is also great to work within a passionate and dedicated team who always have the student at the core of everything they do.”
Why did you decide to pursue a career in Additional Learning Support?
“I have always wanted to work with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), especially in a college environment. I believe that further education can provide a second chance at education, especially for students who need that extra support or who didn’t enjoy secondary school learning. As a college, we’re here to help students find their future pathway and help them on the journey to achieve their goals and open doors to future careers.”
What has been a highlight of your time at North Hertfordshire College?
“Every year, we have students come to us who doubt their ability. Seeing them gain confidence and believe in themselves makes me feel proud. The journey that each student goes through during their studies with the College, through the knowledge they build on their main programmes, the skills that grow through their Personal & Academic Development sessions, and the support they receive from my team and I all make a difference. It’s very fulfilling.”
If you could speak to someone who is thinking of starting their own career with North Hertfordshire College, what would you say to them?
“I would wholeheartedly recommend NHC to anyone who is looking to work with us. We have a hugely dedicated team across the College who want our students to have the best possible outcome from their time with us.”
