Meet Kishore Teelanah, who works with North Hertfordshire College as a Course Team Leader for our Level 3 Science programmes! Kishore is experienced in delivering excellent science teaching sessions to his learners, drawing on his own previous experience in the NHS and his passion as a STEM Ambassador.

What makes your courses stand out to students?
“Employer engagement and links with industry are an important feature in our courses. It is also relevant to our learners’ studies to be exposed to guest speakers and have visits out into industry. We have had visits to and from GSK, and I’m looking forward to working with the GSK team to deliver our new T Level in September. I am also grateful to our technical team, who work to a high standard in preparing science practicals – not just for teaching, but for open events and other promotions too.”
What did you do before you joined North Hertfordshire College?
“I was a qualified nurse in the NHS, and part of my role involved teaching Student Nurses. After I finished my first degree and my teacher training, I started to teach part-time in my previous college where I studied A Levels myself.
“I have since taught for over thirty years in further education (FE) and higher education (HE) settings, having worked as a Head of Science and a Programme Area Manager, and even a Senior Tutor in Higher Education. In these roles, as well as my current role with North Hertfordshire College, I’m able to lead a team and ensure high teaching standards.
“I love science and its applications, and I’m also very keen in teaching the subject. I’m a STEM Ambassador, which means I promote these subjects in schools and colleges during National Science Week. With my experience from working with schools and in both FE and HE, I promote teaching as an option for my learners to explore.”
How has your own industry experience enhanced your teaching?
“I use my experience from working as a qualified nurse in all aspects of teaching health, diseases, clinical aspects, and biomedical applications.
“From my experience as a teacher, I have seen that students leave further education or higher education with a great qualification and a stronger approach to life and work. I am very familiar with science courses and the demands it has on learners and I’m able to support them through this journey. This is also helped from my other work background in Health and Wellbeing, as I’m able to guide learners and team members in times of stress and anxiety to cope with the demands of study, work, and family life.
“My science specialism is in cancer and diabetes and I give talks on these subjects. I’m also a mentor for final year BSc and MSc degree students and their science projects at Kingston University.”
What do you enjoy about working with North Hertfordshire College?
“I like the friendly atmosphere created by colleagues across NHC. The campus is great and the science labs and the resources are impressive – they’re appealing study environments, helping promote science and the growth of the department.
“I’d also say that NHC has good prospects for committed teaching and support staff. In my experience, I have seen LSAs and other non-teaching staff who are keen to teach go on to do further training to become teachers and other professionals through the support and training opportunities.
“I’m enjoying our curriculum planning for September and I’m looking forward to supporting the team over the year.”
