Meet James, who started his North Hertfordshire College career as an apprentice in our IT department, and now works with us as a Service Desk Technician. Find out more about James’ career so far in his Meet the Team interview:
What inspired you to pursue a career in IT, and why did you choose to take the apprenticeship route?
“I’ve always loved using and working with computers and had been looking for ways to develop my skills and start a career in the IT sector. I saw an opening for an apprenticeship with North Hertfordshire College as a Service Desk Technician online, and I really liked the idea of developing my skills practically through a job whilst also completing a qualification at the same time.
“My apprenticeship has set me up really well in terms of skills development, both from my classes and on-the-job experience. My time with the College has given me exposure to many aspects of IT that I wouldn’t have otherwise had access to at many other places. I’ve been able to develop key skills that position me well to progress to higher roles within IT, mainly a role with a networking focus.”
What did you enjoy the most about your apprenticeship?
“I enjoyed the amount of practical experience I was able to accumulate alongside a full level 3 IT qualification. This amount of experience is not something I could have gained from a classroom or an online course. The opportunity to learn and gain experience in a real workplace setting was incredibly beneficial as I could see the real-world application of my learning.”
What has been a highlight of your time with North Hertfordshire College so far?
“Since completing my own apprenticeship, I have also mentored another apprentice. Being able to teach and develop a new member of staff, replicating my own apprenticeship journey, and seeing that member of staff become a successful and now permanent member of the team has been incredibly rewarding and filled me with a great sense of pride.”
If you could speak to someone who is thinking of joining the North Hertfordshire College team, what would you say to them?
“Take the leap! You’ll find no end of supportive staff here at the College, and you can really develop your skills and career in a positive, supportive environment.”
