Say hello to Isabelle, an Additional Learning Support (ALS) Coordinator and Inclusion Assistant over at our Engineering and Construction Campus! Isabelle works hard to ensure our learners have the best possible support in their study programmes to help them achieve their goals.

What do you do in your role as an Additional Learning Support (ALS) Coordinator and Inclusion Assistant?
“My roles and responsibilities include coordinating ALS support to all learners. This involves referring students for exam access arrangements, liaising with parents, sharing updates, and organising and co-chairing EHCP meetings. I report directly to curriculum teams and the ALS manager to put strategies in place that help our learners reach their goals.”
Can you tell us a bit about your NHC career journey so far?
“I completed the Award in Education Training (AET) as I wanted to be a French tutor, and joined NHC’s agency as it suited my needs and my family’s needs, and I was able to keep studying at the same time. I was then quickly recruited by the ALS department, where I have progressed through the team and taken on further responsibilities.
“I originally started as an ALS Inclusion Assistant around 8 years ago. I was given more and more responsibilities to enhance my role as an Inclusion Assistant. The opportunity arose for an ALS Coordinator position, which I successfully applied for in 2022. I’m now managing the ALS team at the Engineering and Construction Campus, which I’m enjoying immensely.”
What do you enjoy the most about working with NHC?
“I thoroughly enjoy working with young people, watching them go through their education journey and achieve their qualification with support from me and my team. I also enjoy the different challenges I get to approach as a Coordinator – no two days are the same. Talking to parents, reassuring, supporting, and liaising with professionals outside our organisation all helps us to achieve the results needed for the young people we’re working with, and I’m glad I’m able to play a part in this.
“One of my highlights of working with the College happened during lockdown. I supported young students remotely as they faced a ranged of different challenges, including dealing with extreme anxiety. It was great to welcome them back to college on a face-to-face basis and see them flourish and achieve their goals.”
If you could speak to someone who is thinking of joining the North Hertfordshire College family, what would you say to them?
“I have great support from my manager and work colleagues, and I have always enjoyed coming into work. For me, working with young people is a real joy. My advice is be prepared to show kindness, work hard, and celebrate achievements no matter how big or small. The rewarding experience we can all achieve at North Hertfordshire College, whether that’s as a staff or a student, is priceless.”
