Since first joining the NHC family, Debbie has had the opportunity to learn and progress through various roles within our SEND provisions. She now works as our Head of Additional Learning Support.

What do you do in your role with North Hertfordshire College?
“I have always had a really varied role at the College and been able to work with many students over the years which has been such a pleasure. I am now the Head of Additional Learning Support.”
How has your role changed since you first started working with NHC?
“I started as a volunteer in our specialist SEND provision before becoming a Learning Support Worker with the College’s agency. I then became a permanent member of staff in a Learning Support Worker role before moving up to become a Job Coach, then a Course Team Leader, Deputy Head of Curriculum, and now Head of ALS. NHC has supported me fully in my aspirations and career over these years.”
What inspired you to explore a career in SEN?
“I started working in the sector 25 years ago. After I finished my university degree, I did some volunteer work in a school in South Africa for children with SEN and physical disabilities. I found that I had a good rapport with the students, as well as a passion for educating, supporting, and helping young people get the best out of life and have fun.
“I’ve worked in a variety of support roles in both education and social care. I’ve worked as a Support Worker for day services and residential care, as a day service coordinator, and in a role supporting adults transitioning from long hospital stays into their own homes.”
What do you enjoy the most about working with NHC?
“Definitely supporting both students and fellow members of staff to be confident, happy, and be their best in life. I love to champion development and inclusion for all members of our community.
“I’ve had so many highlights during my time with the College, but one of my favourites has to be being able to observe students with SLD [Severe Learning Difficulties] grow in confidence – especially in communicating – and have fun. There’s nothing in the world that’s quite like watching a young person come into college as a child and leave as a content adult.”
If you could speak to someone who is thinking of starting their own career with North Hertfordshire College, what would you say?
“I would encourage them to join us. We really are a dedicated and experienced team who will help you in your career with a focus on offering the best we can for our learners. NHC champions the development of staff as well as students. Remember to tell someone if you aspire to develop your career or to learn more – the opportunities are there, and people are keen for you to progress and achieve those goals.”
