Stevenage Campus Sparks Joy with Magical Week 2024

Published on October 31, 2024

At North Hertfordshire College, we’re dedicated to helping our learners achieve their full potential. One of the ways we do this is by providing wellbeing support throughout their NHC journey, including 1:1 counselling sessions and relaxed learning experiences that offer our learners a chance to pause and take time to reflect.

That’s why our learners at our Stevenage campus have taken part in Magical Week as a way to unwind and recharge in the first half-term. Vickie Sharp, Course Team Leader for Child Development Studies, told us: “This time of year can be challenging for new students as they transition from secondary school into FE for numerous reasons, so this is a welcomed intermission for everyone.”

Check out some of the activities the students taken part in!

Mindfulness moments with technology

Health & Social Care and Education & Early Years students have explored how our VR headsets and immersive suite can be used in therapeutic ways. Our learners have taken part in meditation surrounded by a forest landscape in the laser room, enjoyed a yoga session in our immersive suite, and created works of art in a virtual world using VR headsets – move over, Bob Ross! These experiences all helped our learners feel more relaxed and recharged, ready to take on their next activity.

eSports Competition

Ready, set – game! Our Digital students put their skills to the test in a friendly eSports competition, playing a range of games such as Mortal Kombat and Rocket League. As well as being a great bonding experience with their fellow students, the competition also gave them time to become more familiar with the gaming suite facilities at our Stevenage campus. We can’t wait to see how they use the space in the future!

Den building challenge

Outdoor learning is an increasingly popular teaching method for early years education. To help our learners better understand the benefits, they enjoyed a session of outdoor learning themselves, taking part in a den building challenge that pitted Level 2 and T Level students against each other. This was a great opportunity for our learners to think creatively and enjoy some fresh air (and a bit of rain) as they worked together to create their structures.

Facing fears with animal handling

How do you feel about snakes and tarantulas? Our Health & Social Care and Education & Early Years students faced their fears about these creatures by getting up close and personal with them, thanks to a visit from Safari Stu. Our learners coached each other through their nerves, supporting their peers to overcome their fear and hold one of the creatures themselves – an experience to remember!
